Bandmaster Mervyn Tarrant Retires

After 21 years as Bandmaster of Copthorne Silver Band, Mervyn Tarrant finally handed over the baton at his official 'retirement' on 20th November 2008.

To mark this auspicious occasion, the Band decided to hold a surprise band practise dedicated to Mervyn. After a brief introduction and welcome to the guests by Band chairman Norman Brown, the new Bandmaster, Peter Swann presented a potted history of Mervyn's accomplishments as the 'Boss'. As part of this, a number of anecdotes recalling some of the lighter (embarassing) moments experienced by him during his tenure were recalled by several bandmembers.

During the evening Mervyn was invited to conduct the Band in playing a several of his favourite Brass Band arrangements including the Salvation Army march 'Montreal Citadal'.

Over many years, the Band has provided music for the very successful Copthorne Scout & Guide Gang Shows. Mervyn's significant contribution to this was detailed by Gwyn Cheesmuir who confirmed this had been recognised by the Scout & Guide Associations. A group of scouts and their leaders presented him with a silver 'Thank You' badge, the highest award that can be given to a non-uniformed person for services to Scouting.

Mervyn was also presented with a gift from all the bandmembers as a token of their thanks and appreciation for all his efforts in conducting the band over 21 years.

Following the formalities, a buffet and specially designed cake was enjoyed by all those present.

The band is very pleased that Mervyn will continue to play cornet with us and deputise for Peter as required.
